Metsä -Multia Oy´s experiences of HSEQ®

Metsä-Multia is a company specialized in mechanized logging from Central Finland, headquartered in Multia.
We provide logging-related services to our customers, who are mainly forest industry companies, sawmills and Forest Management Associations. Our service package includes the implementation of logging sites and design services.
Our service is comprehensive, enabling our customers to focus on their core business and tasks. We handle logging from start to finish at our customers’ sites. Another significant feature of our operations is that the majority of logging sites are on the forest farms of Finnish private individuals, meaning that when we do our work, we manage their property. We operate mainly in Central Finland and North Pirkanmaa. Our geographical area of operation covers approximately 30,000 square kilometers. We have approximately 130 employees and approximately 70 forest machinery units. Our turnover in the 2023-2024 financial year was EUR 17.8 million.

Our experiences of the HSEQ® assessment

We have not previously had certified quality- or environmental systems, although our operations and operating system have been organized in accordance with ISO principles. It is important to us that our operations support our customers’ goals as comprehensively as possible. We have invested in various areas of delivery management, delivery reliability, quality and responsibility. We had thought that we would need a good external assessment procedure to support and verify our work. The HSEQ assessment suited our goals well. The cluster includes several companies in the forest and forest industry. Utilizing our assessment data for their information needs was an additional incentive for us to participate in the assessment.

Our first HSEQ assessment was in November 2024. It began with a comprehensive self-assessment and continued with an assessment visit by a Kiwa assessor and two representatives of our client. We learned a lot and received development suggestions for developing our operations. We were also pleased to discover that in many cases our previous work and efforts had been in the right direction from the assessment perspective. We received 576 points from our first assessment and a number of development and improvement suggestions. We have already taken some of the suggestions into account in our development activities.

I recommend the HSEQ assessment to companies that aim to stay up to date and get the tools to develop their operations – or simply have the level of their operations assessed. The assessment certainly works for many different situations and goals. A certificate on the office wall is more than just a piece of paper.
